Garden Update and Request for Help With Deer

In this video I asked about preventing deer from entering my garden.  Since then I have begun to build a strong fence.  The minimum height is 6 feet.  My hope is that deer will look at the area inside as too difficult to jump into, and go elsewhere.  Many people talk about using smells and tastes to drive deer away.  My experience with hair, lion dung, dogs, dial soap, garlic and pepper is that these methods do not work.

I hope you enjoy the tour.  Im looking forward to posting more updates later this summer

Fish Fetching Fail 2013

I took a half day off yesterday to go to Boulder to get my 50 new baby trout.  Had the trash can cinched down tightly.  Had my inverter, air pump, and duct tape.

It was so exciting seeing the 50 baby fish swimming around in their little bucket before we headed out.  I couldnt wait to get home and get some pictures...theyre just so cute!

After a 2+ hour drive from Boulder, at least half of which was spent in a pretty major rain storm (yay, rain!  boo, low visibility), I ran in the house to grab my cameras.  When I removed the lid, my heart sank....all but five or six of my new babies were lying at the bottom of the trash can, not moving.  :-(

I started scooping them out so I could move them to the big tank to see if any could be revived.  After several minutes, out of 50 fish, only ten survived.  Worse than the dumped-out-in-the-bed-of-a-hot-truck-in-the-scorching-sun episode of last year!  The only thing I can think of is that when I put the air tubes into the trash can for transportation, I didnt put the air rocks on them because they were kind of gummy and I was afraid they would get less air that way.  Instead, the rocks werent there to weigh them down, so I think the tubes popped up to the top of the water and blew out into the air instead of into the water.  So sad seeing all those cute little rainbows dead.  :-(
One of the babies - This is how big Fatty McFish was when I got her last year.

Zipped up bag of fish failure - I read that if you fry them up crisp enough, its easier to get the tiny bones out.
Worth a shot.  Or I guess I could boil them for fish stock - yum!  :-{

Today, on the way home from work, I decided to cheer myself up, so I stopped at PetSmart and bought three small koi fish to put in the tank with the trout.  Koi can survive cold (even freezing) water, so I figured why not add some color to my sad little tank of survivors.

As soon as I added them to the tank, the koi swam right over to the group of trout.  The trout were like, "whuuuuttt???" and swam away.  But within a few minutes, they were all hanging out together like a nice blended family.  Dont ask me how I am going to "harvest" one set of fish and keep the others.  Or how I will explain the sudden disappearance to my Koi babies.  One day at a time...

Trout and Koi Buddies
I tried to get some video of the new fish.  Sorry for the awful cinematography - trying to hold the aquarium light just right, while ducking under the grow beds and holding the camera steady.  Hopefully no one gets sea sick from watching this.

A Garden Update

This is my garden layout.  Its an odd shaped lot, but Ive made it work.  Im experimenting with wicking beds, hugelkulture, aquaponics, bioponics, hydroponics, and bio-char.

The greenhouse is for seedlings,

The propagation room uses aquaponic beds in a well insulated grow room with a 400W ceramic metal halide bulb, but the south facing window is generally all I use.  This room has media, deep water culture (DWC), and wicking beds for propagating by cuttings.

The hoop house has a bioponic system and a hydroponic system in it.  During the summer I can use a shade cloth and in the winter I keep the rain out with plastic which offers just a little freeze protection, but the ends are left open.  There are also to DWC beds connected outside of the hoop house.

The engineered septic system (ESS) takes up a large part of my nursery.  I cant plant in it so Ive utilized the area by building a half hoop over it for vines to grow on.  This should create a very nice place with shade during the summer heat.  There are twi wicking beds up on the ESS which is raised 2 feet above the rest of the area.   I used livestck panels to create a curved trelis over this area.  Here is a picture from my friend Vlad in Serbia which shows the vines with fruit hanging down from above.  This is what I am hoping to achieve in order to create a shady area where I can sit and enjoy my garden

The plot map shows the potting table all the way around back of the workshop.  I moved it behind the greenhouse and hung some shade cloth.  This has worked out a lot better since it is closer to my potting resources.

This is my bioponic/hydroponic hoop house

Water Circulation

In this post, I will document the specific configuration of the pump and drain system.

Pumping water - Here is a picture of the submersible pump Im using.  We werent sure how to connect it, so I tried to take a close enough picture that you can see how its connected.  We used a small section of old garden hose and zip ties to connect to the little tube that comes out of the pump.  At the top of the section of garden hose is a standard garden hose attachment.  I didnt want metal in the tank, so I bought a male hose end at Walmart for about $2 and attached it to the hose section.  Its probably more difficult to find this piece in the winter, but you might be able to find one online or at Home Depot or Lowes.  There is a female adapter attached to the PVC pipe that allows the hose to be connected to the pipe.  We purposely chose to have the little section of hose so there would be some play if we needed to move the pump once it was all hooked up.

Here you can see the pipe coming up from the tank and splitting off to each of the grow beds.  The pipe coming up from the tank is 3/4 inch that splits into two 1/2 sections going into the grow bed.  Theres a 3/4-inch-to-2x1/2-inch tee at the top of the 3/4-inch pipe.  On each side of the tee, I cut a small section of 1/2-inch pipe to connect to one end of the valve.  Another section of 1/2-inch pipe on the other side extends over the bed, then an elbow is attached to that section and another section of 1/2-inch pipe goes down into the media in the grow bed.  The extra section going into the bed goes a couple of inches into the gravel in order to prevent splashing.

Draining - The water is drained from the grow beds back into the tank using a bell syphon.  We followed the instructions in a paper entitled "Construction of Automatic Bell Siphons for Backyard Aquaponic Systems," written at the University of Hawaii.  This is an excellent step-by-step document that includes detailed pictures at each step.

The picture on the left is the stand pipe, as described in the University of Hawaii paper.  Note the Uniseal fitting at the bottom of the pond.  This is what seals the pipe and the pond so there is no leakage.  I had a hard time finding this part without having to pay quadruple the cost of the fitting to ship it.  However, I found this great online store that not only charged a reasonable price for shipping, but they even had a useful video clip showing how to use the fitting.  Bulk Reef Supply sold me the fitting for under $2, and I think shipping for three fittings was under $3.  Heres a link to the fitting I purchased, but you might need a different size.  Check out the video, though, its pretty cool.  The picture in the center is the bell syphon, and the picture on the right shows the syphon in the grow bed with the larger pipe (gravel guard) around it.  I also added a piece of screen on top to keep unwanted material or bugs from falling or flying in.

Drain pipe
The picutre above is the drain pipe that comes out of the bottom of the grow bed.  Note the section of pipe that extends from the lower elbow.  Adding a section of pipe, instead of just leaving the elbow by iteself, will reduce the amount of splashing.

I also added a little home made filter to the drain pipe for the first few days, just to try and eliminate any particles that might have made it into the pipe.  I dont want anything being sucked into the water pump and clogging it.  I actually did have a coupe of pieces of gravel get into it (I think they got sucked in when I shut it off one time) and jam the pump blade.  Luckily, I noticed it and shut it off before the motor burned out.
FIlter

Filter

The pictures above show the filter I made.  I just got some filter material and filter carbon from the fish section at PetSmart, put them in the bottom of a planter, and hung it under the drain pipe for a few days.

Timing - A lot of people write that when using a bell syphon configuration, they leave their pump on 24x7.  That was my plan, but after listening to my husband gripe about paying 35 cents a day to run it, I decided to put mine on a timer.  Also, I think using a timer will prevent possible overflow if the drain gets plugged up or something else unexpected happens.  We got a $6 timer that can be "programmed" in half-hour increments.  Its not one of the digital programmable timers, but it was cheap, and there isnt a limit on how many events you can program.  Well, other than the 48 half hours available in a day.
Also, dont forget to use GFCI connections for anything near your tank!!!!  I replaced the old outlet that I was going to use for the water pump and air pump with a GFCI outlet that doesnt require any changes at the circuit breaker box.  If you dont feel comfortable doing this, you can buy a plug like this one that plugs into your existing wall outlet and makes it GFCI compliant.  This is cheap safety for you and your family and pets!!!

Lessons learned - First, as I mentioned, I think the pump I purchased was too powerful.  Thats OK, since Im using the valves to control the flow, but I wonder if that will eventually put too much strain on the pump.  Guess Ill find out.
Second, I should have used larger pipes for the drain pipes, stand pipes and bell syphons.  When I dont control the flow from the pump, the tubs fill up more quickly than the pipes can drain.  This means the syphon never breaks and it could lead to potential overflow in the grow beds.

Thats it for this installment.  I hope some of these tips help you in the planning and construction of your system!

Preparing for Plants and Fish

After building the system and adding gravel, I purchased a tank cycling kit and a start-up test kit.

Its important to cycle the tank before adding fish, otherwise your fish may be in a lot of distress, and might even die, due to high levels of ammonia.  I wont go into a lot of detail about that, since you can find plenty of information elsewhere, but its an important consideration before you get your fish - especially if you have to travel several hours to get your fishies.

The Aquaponic Source has a good overview of the cycling process.  This is also where I purchased my kit for $15.  I suppose I could have tried using regular liquid ammonia, but I figured this would be safer and faster.  I also purchased a test kit from Aquaponic Source.

Ill post some of my readings and dates in a later post - maybe when I get my fishes.

Lessons learned - I should have tested the pH of my water BEFORE I added the gravel.  I think there is a lot of limestone or something in our rock, because adding the rock raised the pH level in our tap water from about 6.4 to about 7.6.  Luckily, although the 7.6 is a little more alkaline than recommended, I dont think its dangerously high.  However, since I had to carry in several hundred pounds of gravel one bucket at a time, I would have been pretty upset if I had to find another media source, empty the grow beds and haul in more of whatever I ended up using.

May 2014 Update

Ive still got five trout in the tank.  I threw a bunch of wildflower seeds in one bed, just to see what happens.  The plants have grown, but no flowers, probably due to the cold water temps.  Now that its starting to warm up, I expect the cilantro to grow a lot more quickly, and maybe I will get some flowers.  Because we dont have A/C and we heat mostly with a wood stove, the temperatures inside the house arent as constant as they would be with central hear and air, so the water temperature fluctuates with the seasons.

Instead of typing a bunch of stuff, this time I decided to just narrate the video.  Not sure if anyone can understand my mumbling over the sound of the water draining...

UPDATE:  After I uploaded this, I watched it and realized you probably cant hear anything I say, so heres a rough transcript:

Me: "Blah blah fish blah blah....I still have five fish....one is a lot bigger than the other.  Lets feed them.  They love dried meal worms....blah blah blah....
Here are the plant beds."
Cat in the backgroud: "meow."
Me: "In the left plant bed, I planted a bunch of wildflower seeds.  They havent produced any flowers yet, probably because the water is too cold.  Oh, that looks like some little flowers coming in.  In the right plant bed, I have some basil and cilantro.  And here is Armando, the fish keeper."

Garden Update

Its been a week since I added Epson Salts.  While I dont see significant growth the Epson salts have brought vibrant deep green color to the leaves.

These plants may be a lost cause since they were stunted so young, but Ill continue to observe their recovery.
I am experimenting with 8 different methods of growing.  AP, Bioponics, Bio-Char, Hugelkuture, dirt, Wicking Beds, Hydroponics, and  Kratky Method.  The tomatoes from the wicking beds, hugelkulture, hydroponic and wicking bed systems taste very good.  Given the problems Ive recently encountered with my bioponic system its not fair to judge the taste from that system.

Of all the methods I have come to like wicking beds the best.  Water levels must be maintained, but the reservoir allows one to be less attentive and if the soil web is good the plants take care of themselves..

Summer Update Mutant Plants!

Ive been really lazy about posting to this blog, so heres a quick update.

Fish - Poor fishes, you have such a bad fishy mommy...
As the weather got warmer, I failed to add water to the tank.  One day, the timing of the two grow beds filling with water, but not enough to trigger the syphon, aligned like a bad horoscope (does that even make sense?) and sucked up almost all of the water in the fish tank.  The fish were left in about four inches of dirty water, and seven of them died.  :-(
My son had been down there about two hours earlier and everything was fine.  Since the fish werent stiff from rigor mortis, I figured they were still safe enough to eat, so I ate them...and they were good!  Then, a few days ago, there was another floater, so I ate him, too.  I think Ive still got six or seven live fish.  Theyre probably about 10 inches long now.

Plants - In an attempt to reach real sunlight, my plants have been growing freakishly large leaves and stalks.  I cant find the picture, but one of my broccoli plants, which languished all winter, and grew a skinny little stalk about the size of a thin piece of yarn, suddenly took off and grew giant leaves and a stalk about the size of my thumb.  The weird thing is that the bottom of the plant was still the size of a piece of yarn, and was trying to support the giant thumb stalk.  I decided to take everything out and stick with lettuce and other leafy greens.  I transplanted the broccoli and a few strawberry plants in the garden outside.  I didnt expect them to do very well, and my low expectations were met the next day when a long heat wave hit and withered the plants that were used to 70 degree temperatures.  The broccoli plant is still alive, but the strawberries all withered and died.
One of the strawberry plants I pulled had some blossoms, which I didnt notice until I had already pulled them (actually, my husband noticed them and told me I should put them back in the indoor grow beds).  I replanted it indoors, expecting it to die from shock, but it continued to grow and has produced several berries.  One thing to note is that aquaponic experts recommend against planting flowering plants.  These strawberry plants were in the bed for about six months, so I didnt expect them to flower.  They were growing mutant-sized leaves, so I figured they would never have the energy to flower.  I would still go with the experts recommendations not to plant flowering plants, but it was kind of cool to get some actual fruit from these plants.  I tasted one the other day, and it was kind of bland tasting.  Even more bland than a supermarket strawberry.  I guess strawberries love to grow in real sunshine.  Dont we all?

Mutant Strawberries - The smaller berries in this picture are each about an inch long.  Note the gigantic leaf - some of the leaves are larger than the palm of my hand.  Kind of freaky for a strawberry plant.
Speaking of real sunshine, I did add grow lights a few months ago, trying to get a little more growth during the winter months.  Apparently, one of my neighbors saw the lights and told her daughter she thinks were growing...uh....an illicit plant which I shall not name because I dont want my blog to come up in the "wrong" kinds of google searches.  Anyway, I am currently under investigation for a clearance upgrade for my job, so I hope the investigator doesnt choose that particular neighbor to interview.  LOL  Of course, if she does, she is more than welcome to come over and see that all I have are legal, edible leafy greens and a mutant strawberry plant!  :-)

Green onions and Leeks for aquaponics

Who doesnt like the onion class of vegetables?

I first tried some cuts of green onions. It was soooo simple. I used the tops in what ever I was cooking that night and then I placed the bottom of the bulbs in a net pot with expanded clay and within the next day I seen growth. You amazingly cut the same green onions every 2 to 3 weeks. And even sooner if you like the small ones. The only problem that I have is they grow so quick and absorb the water also if you dont cut them in a reasonable time they will fall over. The green onions get very big around. I usually juct cut a few bunches when I harvest and what I dont use I cut and freeze.

Then I tried the leeks the same way. And yes I know usually folks want the white part of the leeks.
Well maybe so, but try some of the green part diced up like a regular onion and you will see its a gold mine. Just cut what you want when you want. And they grow very fast too. I have bags full in my freezer so that when I need a lil onion, this is what I use. Does well in a dip too. Growing Leeks in Aquaponics is definitely one of my top to grow.

And After doing an experiment with chives, Growing chives in aquaponics works pretty good too. They take a lil extra room, because they spread out, and if having the choice I prefer the net pots over the grow grips. The chives dont seem to get as wet on the bottom in the et pots. But all in all thay produce very well and after cutting it all back to put in freezer. I would say within just a couple weeks maybe 3 they are ready to harvest again.

Growing all these onions is such a great addition to your basic lettuce and basil plants. And they are hardy in most temps. They do like a lot of light but if not they just stay a smaller version longer.

Give them a try. I think you will like it.

Oh and please support The ASC MAgazine. Its for sustainable foods for now and the future
